Common Exhaust Issues for Motorcycles

The exhaust system of a motorcycle is important for its aesthetics and performance. The exhaust reduces noise and improves engine efficiency. However, there are certain issues that can occur with the exhaust system and it is good to know how to identify the signs so that you can get the motorcycle to a mechanic quickly.

Sometimes there can be exhaust leaks which can occur because of corroded gaskets

Loose connections or the exhaust pipe being damaged. This can also occur when there are cracks in the exhaust header. When there is a leak, you will hear a hissing noise coming from the system. You may notice that the exhaust noise has increased and that there is a drop in engine performance. There may also be unpleasant exhaust odours as a result of the leak. When this happens, you need to check the system for any visible cracks or damage. If there are any cracks in exhaust components, these can be sealed or welded. Sometimes you will need to replace damaged gaskets.

If your motorcycle is exposed to moisture and other environmental factors

The exhaust pipes can be subjected to corrosion. You will see visible signs of rust on the exhaust pipes in this situation. There may also be cracks or holes developing in the pipe structure because of the weakened integrity. You have to clean the exhaust pipes of the motorcycle and dry them to reduce corrosion. You can also apply a layer of heat resistant paint or ceramic coating to prevent corrosion. If the corrosion has progressed to the point where there is structural damage in the pipe, you will need to replace them.

When exposed to regular heat and pressure, the baffle and packing inside the silencer can deteriorate. Sometimes this can be due to impact or rough riding. This will also lead to an increase in exhaust noise. Engine performance will drop because of the loss of back pressure. When you insect the silencer, you will be able to see signs of damage. You can look for new components that are compatible with your motorcycle so that damaged parts can be replaced. You have to maintain regular cleaning of the motorcycle exhaust system to extend the life of its internal components.

Sometimes the exhaust system can become clogged because of foreign objects entering the tailpipe

This can also be insects or rats entering the tailpipe. Carbon can build up inside causing a block as well. When there is a block, you will notice a drop in fuel efficiency and your engine power will be reduced. You may also notice dark smoke coming from the exhaust because of this. When you are decelerating, you can hear backfiring noises. You have to clean the exhaust system to prevent the build-up of carbon.

The exhaust heat shields are used to protect the surrounding components from the excessive heat generated by the system. These shields can be subjected to damage as a result of impact and rust. When this happens, there will be rattling noises coming from the exhaust area and during inspection you will notice visible rust and damage. You may need to carry out repairs or replacements depending on the extent of damage.
